Routine dental exams are essential for kids and patients of all ages; this includes routine teeth cleanings for older children as well.

Dental exams allow your child’s dentist to spot potential problems early and stop dental health issues before they start. Teeth cleanings rid your child’s teeth of harmful bacteria and cavity-causing plaque and tartar.

Unless your child has a specific oral health concern, visits to the dentist every six months should be sufficient. This schedule has been shown to lower cavity risks and keep your child’s teeth healthy.

During the exam, our dentist makes sure teeth are coming in properly in younger patients and that the jaw is developing as it should. We also take periodic x-rays to ensure cavities are not lurking between teeth and nothing is wrong below the gumline.

Based on exam findings, your child’s dentist plans treatment, which may include a tooth-colored filling if there is a cavity. These tooth fillings are designed to match teeth and not detract from your child’s smile.

If your child is prone to cavities, your dentist may suggest a fluoride treatment or dental sealant to strengthen enamel and keep debris away from the teeth.
