Why You Should Care About Preventive Dental Care
Many people wonder why they should see their dentist when they are not experiencing any dental issues. We like to tell our patients—that is the best time to see the dentist! When Dr. Pagonis and her hygienists can monitor your oral health through regular examinations, she is better able to detect potential problems while they are still in their earliest stages.
For example, a tiny amount of tooth decay spotted in a dental X-ray can quickly be fixed with a filling. Left alone, it won’t bother the patient, but it will continue to grow, allowing bacteria to seep inside the tooth. Suddenly, a small cavity becomes an infected tooth in need of a root canal. This could have been prevented with routine visits to the dentist.
Gum disease is another risk. Without regular cleanings and comprehensive exams, it's not possible to know whether gums are healthy or not. We can treat early-stage gum disease; in its later stages, the disease will continue to progress, and we can only manage it. Given that gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss among adults in this country, it’s crucial that you protect your gum health.
