What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a treatment that involves applying tooth-colored resin to a damaged, misshapen, or discolored tooth.

Your dentist may recommend dental bonding to:

  • Repair cracked or chipped teeth
  • Improve the shade of stained or discolored teeth
  • Fill in gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Change the size or length of teeth
  • Alter the shape of teeth
  • Protect an exposed tooth root due to gum recession

Dental bonding and tooth-colored fillings use the same composite material, which can be a cosmetic alternative to silver amalgam fillings.

How Does Dental Bonding Work?

Before any treatment, we perform a comprehensive oral health evaluation, review your medical history, and discuss your needs and goals. Based on this information, we determine which treatment is best for you.

With a dental bonding treatment, your dentist Dr. Pagonis starts by helping you select the composite resin that best matches the color of your tooth. We then roughen the tooth’s surface and apply a conditioning liquid, so the bonding properly adheres to the tooth.

Next, we apply and mold the composite resin, curing the material with a special light. Finally, we finish the treatment by shaping and polishing the bonded tooth, so it looks and feels natural and comfortable.
